They threw one for my wife recently and she asked me what it was about. I explained that it was an american custom, not particularly a british thing to do.
She got guilted into accepting it by her friends (all lovely Europeans by the way).
The breakdown by nationality;
Organiser - Italian
Host - Lithuanian Russian
Guest 1 - Polish
Guest 2 - Bulgarian
Guest 3 - English (didn't turn up)
Guest 4 - Polish
Guest 5 - Russian
Guest 6 - Hungarian
Guest 7 - English (couldn't make it)

I can't remember the nationality of the others.
